The Master: Review

The Master is an Art House Tour de Force. Simply put, the film has such beautiful, inherent traits that display feats of unusual strength, skill and ingenuity. The heart of any story is people and place. Whether it’s a solid narrative or a strong character study of method actors having a pissing contest that ultimately results in a Best Actor* duel, the elements of a great story are present…one just has to work for it. The only aspect of this film one does not have to work for is the performances of Phoenix and Hoffman, which are endlessly entertaining. Seriously, I could have watched another 2 hours of simple dialogue on top of the already emotionally taxing film.

We might have a hard time in remembering a character on film that we tried to get inside the mind of more so than we do with Freddie Quell (Phoenix). The characters are so emotionally raw that it outweighs the narrative that is being told. The question you keep asking yourself is not “what is happening,” but instead “what is he thinking?” The Master runs off this power - the power of a striving action of connectivity between two spirits.

…For those that say “comedies never get their due respect” at the Oscars.

Sure, these movies are devoid of dick and fart jokes, but classically funny, and overall bring a better comedic element to the screen than any foul-mouthed hilarity could. And they were awarded with nominations AND some were overall good enough to win Best Picture. I love comedies with crude humor just as much as the next person, but I certainly don’t expect these type of comedies to garner any nominations, much less win gold.

Hugo was fantastic. Scorsese does it again. Personally, my favorite of his since Goodfellas. This film was just so humanistic and beautiful. Any fan of film history, etc. should see this. Definitely not a movie for the little ones.

The last photo was the first time I ever saw Have Heart, and this was the last, with a few times in between. This was at The Hideaway and I only recognize Justin and Devon. This show was unbelievable. I assume this was taken during “Armed with a Mind.”
